History of the magazine

A forerunner of “Economy and Statistics” was published in 1921, at that time as a journal of the Reich Statistical Office . In its present form, Economy and Statistics was first published in April 1949 by the Statistical Office of the United Economic Area . In September 1950, the newly founded Federal Statistical Office took over the publisher.

The articles published in Economy and Statistics since 1949 are also a document for the contemporary history of the Federal Republic of Germany , because the social developments had to be proven by figures: From the supply of the population with food and housing in the post-war years to the reconstruction of the German economy and that German “ economic miracles” stretched to the first economic recession towards the end of the 1960s. The major reforms of the 1970s, including in the education system and in the agricultural sector, can be traced, as can the economic cuts as a result of the oil crises and the beginning confrontation with questions of the environment. In the 1980s, the public discussion about the relationship between the citizen and the state in connection with the census planned at the time took up a large area. The regaining of German unity and the process of European unification can also be traced. The advance of the Internet and the transition to the information and knowledge society, the new economy and increasing globalization are documented in economics and statistics as well as the introduction of the euro and the European economic and monetary union . Since the year 2000, the consequences of demographic change with the reform of the social security system , but also the German EU Council Presidency and the political discussion on reducing bureaucracy have increasingly determined the topics. The younger age groups were then dominated by the financial market and economic crisis of 2008/2009 and the renewed discussion about growth and prosperity measurement, particularly in connection with the recommendations of the Stiglitz-Sen-Fitoussi Commission .

The appearance of economics and statistics has changed from time to time in these more than six decades, most recently with the first edition of 2015. In addition, the periodicity has been changed from monthly to bi-monthly.
