Economic strategic raw material

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Strategic economic raw materials are metals and minerals whose long-term availability is considered important.

Concept history

The term strategic economic raw materials was first introduced by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the research and development program "Strategic economic raw materials for high-tech Germany" - part of the BMBF framework program "Research for Sustainable Development" (FONA) in the area Resource Efficiency - Used.

background

The availability of certain raw materials - primarily non-energetic mineral resources - is of particular importance for industry in Germany. For example, the metal neodymium is often required for the construction of wind turbines , indium for solar systems and lithium and rare earths for example in electromobility . For these so-called high-tech raw materials, Germany is mostly dependent on imports. The prices for such raw materials are increasing.

activities

In recent years, numerous studies have dealt with the question of what raw material requirements future technologies will entail and what supply risks may arise. Individual mineral elements or groups of substances such as platinum group metals, rare earths and other high-tech metals were analyzed .

The "Economic Strategic Raw Materials for the High-Tech Location Germany" program aims to expand research, development and training along the value chain of non-energetic mineral raw materials over the next five to ten years. The program is aimed at universities, non-university research institutions and commercial companies. It aims to strengthen applied research and its links with basic research. The implementation of the program takes place through specific funding measures (r 2 , r 3 , r 4 ) and is also supported by accompanying measures such as scientific networks or measures to increase the acceptance of domestic raw material extraction. In addition, international cooperation, especially at the European level, is to be significantly strengthened.
