Wishful Thinking is a British rock band that was formed in the 1960s.
The band's greatest success was the 1971 song Hiroshima , which reached a top ten position in the German charts. Before that, they had a small success in 1966 with the song Step by Step , which was listed in the Big L Fab 40 , a hit parade on the pirate station Wonderful Radio London .
Band history
In 1963 Roy Daniels (vocals), Richard Taylor (lead guitar), Alan Elkins (2nd lead guitar), Roger Charles (bass) and Brian Allen (drums) formed the group The Emeralds. Elkins left the formation in 1964.
The band's first single in 1963 and two more in 1965 were released under the band's original name, Emeralds . In the 1960s, it was common to use seasoned session musicians in the studio because of the cost of studio time.
Her second single Don't Listen To Your Friends (1965) was with session guitarist Big Jim Sullivan of the Tom Jones Band.
Her third single King Lonely The Blue (1965) was with session guitarist Jimmy Page , who later became famous with Led Zeppelin . A subsequent single Count To Ten (1967) was with session drummer Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience .
In 1965 Richard Taylor was replaced by Terry New (lead guitar) and in 1966 the first 3 singles appeared under the new band name Wishful Thinking. With the song Step by Step , the group had a respectable success in the Big L Fab 40 , a hit parade on the pirate station Wonderful Radio London .
1967 singer Roy Daniels left the band and came for him Kevin Scott (born as Kevin Finn), who later renamed himself Danny Finn and z. B. was singer with the New Seekers from 1976 to 1978 .
The cast carousel continued to rotate without further successes worth mentioning. For Terry New came John Franklin. And Tony Collier not only replaced Roger Charles on bass, but was also the lead singer on several songs.
Finally, drummer Brian Allen, the last member of the original line-up, was eliminated and Pete Ridley and John Redpath, who stayed in the group until 1979, came in for him.
In 1973 Wishful Thinking were involved in the soundtrack for the British musical film That'll Be the Day (with David Essex and Ringo Starr ). They contributed the song "It'll be Me" and can be seen alongside Billy Fury at a dance competition.
In 1980 the group disbanded.
In May 2012, drummer Brian Allen (1946–2012) died of a heart attack. Kevin Finn (1950-2016) died in February 2016 after a brief illness.

Of the singles who released Wishful Thinking, only Hiroshima became successful. This song about the atomic bomb was written in 1969 by Dave Scott-Morgan (a member of the Electric Light Orchestra in the 1980s ). Lou Reizner produced the song, and he was also the voice for the spoken text in the song.
In 1971 it was released (with the B-side She Belongs to the Night ) as a single and on the album of the same name. In 1972 it was released again, this time as the B-side of the single Clear White Light . But it was not until the mid-1970s that the song developed into a considerable success, especially in Germany, and in 1978 it reached number 8 in the charts. It stayed in the charts for a total of 44 weeks. Sony Music in Germany has the distribution rights for the previous catalog from "Global Records and Tapes GmbH" and Ariola Records.
A German-language cover version of Hiroshima was published in 1982 by the GDR rock band Puhdys .
In 1990 the singer Sandra made a cover version. It reached fourth place in Germany, Switzerland and Israel and 16th place in France.
TV appearance
25 years later after the breakup, on April 16, 2005, the line-up of Kevin Finn, Brian Allen, Tony Collier and John Franklin reunited on the RTL program The Ultimate Chartshow . For the first time in 36 years, the four of them performed together to sing Hiroshima .
