Big Jim Sullivan

Big Jim Sullivan (born James George Tomkins ; born February 14, 1941 in Uxbridge , London ; † October 2, 2012 ) was a British guitarist who was best known as a session musician.

Career

Big Jim Sullivan started playing guitar when he was 14. At 17 he played with Marty Wilde's "Wildcats" , who accompanied Eddie Cochran on a tour of England in the spring of 1960 and who appeared with Gene Vincent on the BBC Saturday Club Radio Show. Sullivan became one of the most sought-after studio guitarists. He has appeared on hundreds of hits from well-known stars and groups, including Dave Berry (with the hit The Crying Game ), Marianne Faithfull ( As Tears Go By ), The Kinks ( You Really Got Me ) and Herman's Hermits ( A Kind Of Hush ).

Between 1969 and 1974 he went on tour with Tom Jones . In 1975 and 1976 he recorded three albums with the band "Tiger". Starting in 1978, Sullivan played for James Last for nine years . During this time he also went on tour with Olivia Newton-John . After that, Sullivan mostly occupied himself with film and commercial music until he started playing with Willie Austen in the neighborhood clubs. The productive partnership lasted until 1997.

From 1990 to 1994 Sullivan had a jazz band called "US" with Derek Austen (piano), Malcolm Mortimer (drums) and Herbie Flowers (bass). From 1997 to 1998 the jazz formation "The 3 of US" followed, with Derek Austin (keyboards) and Malcolm Mortimer (drums).
