Help from Freiburg

A friendship was formed with the city of Freiburg im Breisgau in 1988 with the aim of improving the living conditions for the people living there. This is also done in memory of the Freiburg doctor Albrecht "Tonio" Pflaum , who worked there on behalf of the German Development Service since 1980. He was murdered in 1983 by the " Contras " who had been fighting the Sandinista revolutionary government since 1980 . There are projects in the areas of drinking water supply , agriculture , education and culture . Berndt Koberstein from Freiburg was also murdered in 1986 while carrying out a drinking water project . A planned and started project for the electricity supply could not be realized so far because planned funds of the UN are no longer available. The Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium Freiburg has supported educational projects in Wiwilí since 1993 . In 1998, Hurricane Mitch wreaked havoc on the city. In 2015 Wiwilí became the official twin city of Freiburg.
