The Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium Freiburg (DHG Freiburg), a public school , is a general education high school in Freiburg im Breisgau - Herdern with a linguistic, artistic and scientific profile.
history
The Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium Freiburg came into being as a reaction to the lack of space in schools at the end of the Second World War: During the bombing raid on Freiburg on November 27, 1944 , numerous school buildings were badly damaged or, like the Berthold-Gymnasium (BG) opposite the Freiburg City Theater, were completely off disappeared from the scene. Only the buildings of the Catholic Institute on Eisenbahnstraße and the Friedrich-Gymnasium (FG) on Ludwig-Aschoff-Platz were spared.
Therefore, by a decree of the Baden Ministry of Education in 1946, the girls 'upper secondary school was divided into two parts: While one part of the students stayed in the Catholic Institute (today's St. Ursula grammar school ), the new "girls' upper secondary school II" moved into the premises of the new named "Gymnasiums Freiburg", where the students of the two humanistic grammar schools (BG and FG), the two boys 'upper secondary schools (from 1948: Rotteck and Kepler grammar school ) and the female students of the "girls' upper secondary school II" were taught in three day shifts .
In autumn 1948 the still young Ministry of Education decided to restructure the Freiburg school landscape: the humanistic "Gymnasium Freiburg" was renamed Berthold-Gymnasium . The Friedrichs-Gymnasium officially no longer existed. The previous upper secondary schools were now called grammar schools . The "Girls Secondary School II" was given the current name Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium on September 28, 1948, after the German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff .
Due to the increasingly precarious spatial situation, the city of Freiburg decided to split the "Gymnasium Freiburg" into two humanistic grammar schools and to build a new building below the Hirzberg in the east of Freiburg for the Berthold grammar school . Since the school building on Ludwig-Aschoff-Platz was intended for the Friedrich-Gymnasium, which became independent again from 1965 , an architecture competition was announced in 1962 for a new building in the Herdern Musikerviertel, which was won by the Stuttgart architects Behnisch & Partner in spring 1963 . This architecture office became known in the following years 1967–72 for the construction of the Munich Olympic Stadium . With the move into the new school building, coeducation was introduced for the school year 1966/67 .
The DHG has been a recognized UNESCO project school since 2010 and is therefore a member of ASPnet, UNESCO 's worldwide school network .

The young republic's understanding of democracy should be reflected in the architecture: The school building was planned and built as a composition of three different heights with the same square base, which is reflected in the school logo. In the spirit of an open society , the classrooms in each of these three building wings are grouped around a central hall that is used as a traffic route by all students and teachers, spanned from above by MERO room structures and illuminated by ribbon windows. The four-story hall (A-wing) serves as the main distributor, the two-story (B-wing) as an event location for school parties, the single-story (C-wing) as a workshop and in connection with the adjoining music hall as an auditorium. The three buildings are based on a strict grid of 2.5 mx 2.5 m, which is not only characterized by its 1,550 precast concrete elements, but also by the wooden wall fittings. Construction work began in spring 1965. After almost two years of construction, the DHG moved into the new building on December 1st, 1966. The official reopening took place on March 17th, 1967. From 2006 to 2009 the building was completely renovated.
Subject profiles
All pupils learn two foreign languages up to grade 10: The first foreign language, English, is followed by French or Latin in grade 6 . Three specialist profiles are offered:
Linguistic profile
In the linguistic profile, Italian is added as a third foreign language from grade 8 . In the course level , Italian can be continued for four hours up to the Abitur. To intensify language practice, student exchanges take place with partner schools in Italy, France and French-speaking Switzerland.
Scientific profile
In the natural sciences profile, the core subject natural sciences and technology is added to biology, physics and chemistry from grade 8 . Schoolchildren who are particularly interested can attend the Freiburg seminar for mathematics and natural sciences , start a school program and take part in competitions.
Artistic profile
Admission to the artistic profile (from grade 5) depends on an entrance exam. At the end of class 7, it is possible to switch to one of the other two profiles. Fine arts are a core subject from grade 8 and can be chosen as a profile or specialty subject in the course level.

The Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium has been a recognized member of the UNESCO project schools since 2010. These undertake to actively support the UNESCO principles of Education for Sustainable Development, Peace and Global Coexistence in all school and extracurricular areas. UNESCO and COMENIUS
- The UNESCO AG meets regularly and creates information material and campaigns on the UNESCO goals.
- The International Project Days of the German UNESCO Schools on global, sustainable topics take place every two years.
- School seminars and summer camps run by the UNESCO school network offer schoolchildren the opportunity to make contacts, learn new things and exchange ideas.
- Conferences and training for teachers of the UNESCO school network serve to exchange ideas and impulses for the work on site.
- Within the European COMENIUS program , pupils work on activities and projects in cooperation with schools from neighboring countries.
- As part of the education offensive Education for Sustainable Development , during the UN World Decade 2005-2014, concrete proposals for action and implementation to promote sustainable action in schools in the areas of nutrition, the environment, energy and mobility were carried out and released in a manual for other schools made available. The projects are documented in the European product and event database "European Shared Treasure".

Since 1993 supports Droste-Hulshoff-Gymnasium education projects in Wiwilí , Nicaragua, the twin city of Freiburg. In 2008, students visited each other as part of a youth exchange. For several years, the teachers' salaries at the school in San Juan de Cachaguita, Wiwili and the new Escuela Rosendo Pinell building were financed by the DHG school community, which opened in 2014. -
Makondo , Uganda : St. Denis Makondo Senior Secondary School
Since 2000, the Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium has maintained a partnership with the St. Denis Makondo Senior Secondary School near Lake Victoria , Uganda. With financial support from the DHG school community, school books were purchased, the renovation of the school building was supported and some AIDS orphans were able to complete their training at the school. -
St. Johnsbury , Vermont , United States : St. Johnsbury Academy In
2017, an exchange program with the St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, USA was initiated with a joint research project.
Understand and preserve nature ( environmental projects )
Climate protection association and environmental protection group
- In 2005, 2008 and 2011 three photovoltaic systems were installed on the roof of the Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium - financed by sponsor sports days for the students and with the cooperation of students, parents and teachers. The Climate Protection Association, founded in 2005 and supported by parents, teachers and former students, acts as the operator. The aim of the climate protection association is to promote environmental and climate protection within the framework of school education, i. H. conveying ecological interrelationships and strengthening the students' environmental awareness.
- In an environmental protection working group, topics such as climate change, energy saving, waste separation and consumer behavior are dealt with and passed on through several campaigns and projects.
Student household beehives and beekeeping group
- In 2015, the student body decided to invest the student budget provided equally by the city and school in the purchase of two colonies of bees.
- A beekeeping company was founded for maintenance purposes.

Sporty working groups and the Droste running team
- Of the approx. 40 working groups on offer, half are in the sporting field.
- The vast majority are led by student mentors who are trained and employed as volunteer youth guides.
- In 2007, the Endurance and Running AG became the registered association Droste-Running-Team eV, which organizes and organizes regular training sessions and camps.
- The Droste Running Team regularly takes part in the Freiburg Marathon, the international Schluchseelauf and the Freiburg Running Night (Freiburg school championships).
