The Vyazma ( Russian Вязьма ) is the first major left tributary of the Dnieper .
It runs along its entire length of 147 km within the Smolensk Oblast ( Russia ). Its catchment area covers 1350 km². The city of Vyazma lies on the Vyasma . The river has its source a good ten kilometers north of the city in a marshland and then turns in a large loop westwards to the upper Dnieper. The discharge into the young Dnieper is not significantly inferior to the discharge of the Dnieper itself.
In earlier times the Vyazma served as a connection on the waterway between the upper reaches of the Dnepr and the river system of the Oka and Volga , with the help of a portage to a tributary of the Ugra .
