Vladimir Lissin

Vladimir Sergeyevich Lissin ( Russian Владимир Сергеевич Лисин , born May 7, 1956 in Ivanovo ) is a Russian entrepreneur, scientist and, since March 2012, the richest man in Russia. Since 1998 he has been CEO of the Russian steel producer Novolipetsk Steel . His net worth was estimated at $ 24 billion in 2011. Unlike the other Russian oligarchs , his fortune is not based on the controversial privatizations of state-owned companies in the 1990s.

He is the author of sixteen specialist books in the field of metallurgy and has contributed to the publication of over 150 scientific articles. Lissin holds 49 patents and certificates.

Life

Lissin began in 1975 as a simple worker in a coal mine in Yushkusbasugol in Novokuznetsk . At the same time he studied at the Siberian Metallurgical Institute and graduated in 1979 with the degree of metallurgy engineer. From 1979 he worked in the iron and steel combine TulaTscherMet in Tula . From 1986 he was deputy foreman there. From 1989 he was Deputy Director General of the Qaraghandy Metallwerke Oleg Soskowets , who was later appointed Minister of Metallurgy and who followed Lissin to Moscow in 1991.

In 1990, Lissin received further higher degrees at the Business Academy for Internal Trade and in 1992 at the Academy for Economics with the main focus on "Economics and Control". This was followed by a doctorate in technical sciences in 1997 and a doctorate in economics in 2005. He is professor of economics and market problems at the Russian Academy of National Economics.

In 1992 he became a manager in the then infamous TransWorld group of the brothers Michael and Lev Chernoi . The TransWorld Group was Russia's largest steel and aluminum exporter at the time and held its own in this highly competitive industry with questionable methods that many observers considered unscrupulous. Vladimir Lissin was responsible for the management of the steel and aluminum works until 1997.

From 1998 he sat on the board of Novolipetsk Steel . When the partners of the TransWorld group separated in 2000, Lissin received the majority share that TransWorld owned in Novolipetsk Steel. This was followed by a two-year power struggle with Vladimir Potanin , who eventually also sold his shares in Lissin.

From 2001 the daily Gazeta appeared in Moscow in the possession of Lissin . The print edition was discontinued in 2010. However, Lissin agreed to keep the website, which was activated in 2009, running. He never made any money with the newspaper, but the investment was necessary to maintain an alternative to the state-controlled media in Russia.

Starting in 2002, Lissin cooperates with his main competitor Alexander Abramow of the Evraz Group (Evraz Holding) within the non-commercial partnership Russian Steel . This cooperation serves to coordinate the purchasing and sales of the two groups as well as joint lobbying work and general strategy agreements.

At the end of 2005, Novolipetsk Steel went public. In 2007 he and his offshore company Silener Management bought 14.42% of the shares in Zenit Bank .

Lissin has been chairman of the European Shooting Confederation since 2009 . In 2018 he was elected President of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).

In the Forbes list of the richest people in the world in 2017, Lissin ranked 57th out of 116 people with total assets of 16.1 billion dollars. Thus, compared to the previous year, Lissin enriched himself by 6.8 billion dollars, far more than any other Russian billionaire. After Leonid Michelson and Alexei Mordaschow , he is currently the third richest man in Russia.

Lissin is married and has three children.
