The British Class 395 is a series of high-speed trains made by Hitachi Transportation Systems and designed for use in Great Britain . Trains of this type are since 2009 by the railway companies South Eastern Railway on the English High Speed Line High Speed One and other lines in the southeast of England used.

During the Olympic Summer Games 2012 , the trains were used under the name Javelin ( Eng. Speer ) for traffic to the London Olympic Park .

history

In 2004 the contract was awarded to build the trains, valued at £ 250 million.

The first train arrived in Southampton on August 23, 2007 by ship from Japan . It was presented at the commissioning of the renovated St. Pancras Station in London and named after the English double Olympic champion Kelly Holmes .

As part of an extensive test program, a class 395 train reached a top speed of 252 km / h on the High Speed One in April 2008 . Preliminary operation also began on the High Speed One on June 9, 2009.

The use of trains shortens travel times in domestic traffic; since the trains went into operation, the journey from London St. Pancras to Ashford has only taken 37 minutes (previously 83 minutes). Travel times to Canterbury (60.5 minutes instead of 102 minutes) and Folkestone (62.5 minutes instead of 98 minutes) have also been reduced.

Full operation on the high-speed line began on December 14, 2009.

The 29 six-car trains have 348 seats in one class, are each 121.8 meters long and consist of two end cars and four intermediate cars. With standing room, the capacity is 508 people. The aluminum wagons were manufactured by Hitachi in Japan using the friction stir welding process developed in Great Britain .

The depot in Ashford (Kent) stationed trains are on the high speed line High Speed One on the top line with AC powered. On classic routes in the southern network, direct current is supplied via a lateral power rail .

commitment

Currently, only the Southeastern railway company operates Class 395. Since December 2009, it has been in service on the route from London St Pancras via Ebbsfleet International and Ashford (using the high-speed line High Speed One ) towards Ramsgate in the county of Kent .

During the 2012 Olympics , which were held in London, the trains shuttled between St Pancras and the Olympic site were near the train station Stratford International used and given this, the nickname Javelin ( dt. Speer ). The travel time between the two stations was seven minutes; up to eight connections per hour were offered. The total number of passengers carried was 1.4 million. Units also operated as javelins for the Paralympic Games .
