history

Barrows

600 meters north-west of Wohlde are 45 burial mounds from the Older Bronze Age , mostly in a small wooded area . It is the most important burial mound cemetery in the district of Celle . This cemetery belonged to the so-called Lüneburg culture area (1500–1200 BC). Originally there were considerably more graves to the east, but in the course of time they had to give way to agriculture. Only predominantly the hills in the forest have remained untouched to this day. The dead were buried here in hollowed-out oak trunks. Stones with scorch marks were found on their heads. It is believed that they are stones from their home hearth. The oak coffins were covered with earth, which was secured against slipping by ring-shaped stone walls. The diverse grave goods of jewelry and weapons indicate that the population of that time must have been wealthy.

A forest chapel stood in Wohlde until around 1623. It is said to have stood near the spot where the replica of a stake is today. The church (a Marienkapelle ), "the chapel of our dear women, the chapel of the blessed and blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of God in Berger Wohld" was probably built around 1383. The Bergen pastor and chronicler Ludwig Spitta wrote around 1875: “And it is quite likely that it was also the first chapel in our Bergen congregation” . Under Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig-Lüneburg , the chapel was donated to the Michaeliskloster in Lüneburg . On January 31, 1510, Pope Julius II issued the last letter of indulgence for the Michaeliskloster in Lüneburg, and this was intended for the pilgrims in Wohlde. The chapel became a popular place of pilgrimage . A few traders settled nearby. A small market was created that has survived to this day, the nationally known Wohlder market . With the beginning of the Reformation the chapel was closed. In the Thirty Years' War it was completely destroyed. The chapel door made of strong oak planks has been preserved; it is now the oldest exhibit in the Römstedthaus local history museum in Bergen.
