history

The house in the then Große Weinmeisterstraße 50 f (later 50 h) was built in 1875/76 by master bricklayer Friedrich Thiemann († at the end of the 1880s) and, after completion, sold it with the 1,333 square meter property to Lieutenant Colonel a. D. Wilhelm von Schmeling. In 1884 Schmeling had the house remodeled by master mason Friedrich August Hasenheyer (1823–1891). The left-hand eaves part of the building was raised and two larger windows were installed. Wilhelm von Schmeling died in August 1918. The house and property went to four beneficiaries from the family of his wife Elisabeth, née von Burgsdorff , who died in March 1918 . The commercial director of the German Officers' Association , Captain Kurt von Burgsdorff (1873–1944), acquired the single-family house and had it rebuilt in early 1934. By installing additional sanitary facilities, three self-contained apartments were created. At the end of 1934 he sold the apartment building to the doctor and city councilor ( DVP from 1919 to 1930) Georg Schneider (1875–1949), who rented two apartments. One of the tenants was the retired President of the Reich Archives, Hermann Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim , who lived in the first floor with his wife Eleonore until 1943.
