Wolf-Dietrich Hess

Wolf-Dietrich Heß (* 1937 ) is a German sports scientist , university professor and athletics official .

Life

At the SG Wissenschaft Halle he was an active athlete himself and already took on tasks as an organizer of athletics competitions during his student days. In 1967, Heß completed his doctoral thesis at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) on the subject of "The category of movement transmission and the biomechanical principle of the coordination of partial impulses: A comparative consideration based on the swing movements in athletic jumps". Hess worked at the MLU in Halle as a professor for sports science, his research work included the athletics sprint and hurdles. In 1991, together with Heinrich Gundlach, he published  the book “Athletics - Sprint, Run, Walk”, he also dealt scientifically with athletic training theory and worked on the creation of framework training plans for the German Athletics Association (DLV). After the establishment of the Athletics Commission within the German Association for Sports Science in 1993, Heß was the  first speaker of this committee together with Winfried Joch .

As an athletics official, Heß became vice-president in September 1990 when the Saxon-Anhalt Athletics Association (LVSA) was founded, and from 1992 to 2006 he was then LVSA chairman. From 2001, Heß also sat on the board of the German Athletics Association and was chairman of the federal committee for training, science and coaching schools in the DLV. In this position he was jointly responsible for the “Athletics Media Library” series. Heß was one of the authors of the publication “Athletics in Saxony-Anhalt: Data, Facts, Figures, Backgrounds”, published in 2003, as well as of the work “Athletics in Saxony-Anhalt: data, facts, figures, background; [Part 2]: Chronicle of the years 1945 to 2005 ”. In 2000, Heß was awarded the Carl Diem shield for his voluntary work and in 2005 the German Athletics Association awarded the Hanns Braun Memorial Prize for special achievements and exceptional merits in German athletics.

In the German Sports Association (DSB), Heß participated in a working group that revised the framework guidelines for basic, advanced and advanced training, and he also contributed to the revision of the curriculum for certified trainer training at the Cologne Trainer Academy .
