Wolfgang Breul

Wolfgang Breul , also Breul-Kunkel , (* 1960 in Eschwege ) is a German Protestant theologian . From 2001 to 2007 he was a research assistant at the Philipps University of Marburg and has been Professor of Church and Dogma History at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz since 2009 .

Life

Breul studied Protestant theology from 1983 to 1989 at the universities of Marburg, Bern and Göttingen . After successfully completing his degree, he was vicar in a local community in Marburg from 1990 to 1992 . In 1992, Breul took on a position as a pastor with a special service assignment at the Department of Protestant Theology at Marburg University, which he held until 1995.

In 1999 he received his doctorate as Dr. theol. at the University of Marburg. The dissertation on the crisis of power and the Reformation. The imperial abbeys of Hersfeld and Fulda approx. 1500-1525 were looked after by Hans Schneider , among others , and published in 2000 as volume 71 as part of the book series Sources and Research on the History of the Reformation . In 2002, Breul was awarded the Josef Leinweber Prize of the Catholic Theological Faculty in Fulda for his work. From 1999 to 2000 he worked on the edition of letters and biographical documents by Johann Arndt , which was funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation as a research grant.

From 2000 to 2001 Breul was a research assistant and from 2001 to 2007 research assistant in the department of church history at the Philipps University of Marburg. In 2006 he completed his habilitation in Marburg with the habilitation thesis Hallesche Generalreform und Pietist Reorganization in the county of Waldeck . In 2007, Breul took on a teaching position for church history at the Theological Faculty of the University of Mainz as a substitute for Irene Dingel , but also held guest lectures at the Lutheran University in Budapest in the same year . From October 2007 he worked on the project of the German Research Foundation The Marriage Understanding of Pietism in the Old Kingdom (1680–1750) . Since 2009, Breul has been a full professor of church and dogma history at the University of Mainz with a focus on the early modern period.

Breul is a member of the Historical Commission for Hesse and the Scientific Society for Theology - Church History Section. He is also on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hessian Church History Association and on the Advisory Board of the Interdisciplinary Center for Pietism Research. He is the author, editor and reviewer of over 30 specialist publications. He is co-author of the Fuldaer Geschichtsblätter , the magazine Archive for Middle Rhine Church History , the magazine Archive for Reformation History and the Encyclopedia of Modern Times . In 2001 he and Lothar Vogel published a commemorative publication on the occasion of Hans Schneider's 60th birthday, and in 2015 he was co-editor of the catalog for the state exhibition in Mainz Ritter! Death! Devil? Franz von Sickingen and the Reformation . Wolfgang Breul is divorced and has a daughter and a son.
