Wolfgang David (born Wolfgang Sengstschmid in St. Pölten on October 5, 1971 ) is an Austrian violinist . Name changed on August 11, 2004 to David.

biography

Wolfgang Sengstschmid was born as the son of Johann Sengstschmid in St. Pölten. Admitted to the violin preparatory course at the Vienna University of Music at the age of eight, Wolfgang David also studied for several years with the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, Rainer Küchl . During his studies he won prizes and awards at renowned international competitions (International Violin Competition Cologne, International Violin Competition Joseph Joachim, International Violin Competition Pretoria). He later continued his studies with Igor Ozim at the Cologne University of Music and with Yfrah Neaman at the Guildhall School of Music in London.

David has appeared as a soloist with orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra , Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Bern Symphony Orchestra or the New York Virtuosi and has given concerts in numerous countries at prominent locations such as the Musikverein and Konzerthaus Vienna, Carnegie Hall New York, the Cerritos Center Los Angeles, the Wigmore Hall London, the Victoria Hall in Geneva and the Philharmonie Cologne .

Wolfgang David has given concerts in Europe, Japan, South Korea, South Africa and the USA, where the Washington Post wrote: "He's exploring the heights of making music." The English music magazine "The Strad" described his game as "as emotionally complex as you are can only wish. "

High points of his career were a concert for the Queen of Thailand and a gala concert in the Great Assembly Hall of the United Nations in New York, where he interpreted Vivaldi's “Four Seasons” together with the New York Virtuosi.

In addition to his preoccupation with the traditional main repertoire, Wolfgang David also devotes himself to modern compositions and works intensively with contemporary composers such as David Gompper , Joseph Dangerfield , Noel Zahler , Rainer Bischof , Luke Dahn , Ching-chu Hu , Jeremy Dale Roberts , John Allemeier etc. Some of these composers wrote works especially for him, which he premiered and recorded on CD.

He released an album with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the Swiss conductor Emmanuel Siffert and three CDs with the American pianist David Gompper. In April 2011 NAXOS released another CD together with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Wolfgang David plays a violin made by Carlo Bergonzi , Cremona after 1724, which is made available to him on loan from the Oesterreichische Nationalbank.
