Wolfgang Günther Fischer (born November 27, 1905 in Dresden ; † July 9, 1973 ) was a German librarian.

Life

Fischer was the son of Curt Fischer and his wife Margarete, geb. Scoop. In 1925 he volunteered at the Museum for Books and Writing in Leipzig, where he was particularly encouraged by the local director, Albert Schramm. Fischer completed his training for the senior service, took his exam in 1927 and worked in the senior service until 1937. At the same time he studied art history, German and history at Leipzig University and received his doctorate in 1935. Even during his studies Fischer published scientifically. In addition, he took the courses for the academic library service and took the exam for the higher library service in 1937. He then became a librarian, later a library councilor, at the Leipzig City Library , where he took over library management. From 1942 to 1945 he was in the military. As a prisoner of war in Jever , Fischer volunteered to look after the valuable library of the Mariengymnasium there . In 1946 he went to the State Library in Oldenburg as an employee in the scientific service , he hired Paul Raabe and trained him. In 1949, Fischer became director of the Oldenburg library, an office he held until his retirement in 1968. Fischer moved the library from the castle to the armory, was able to steadily increase the library's acquisition funds, had the catalog copied onto a card catalog and a newspaper directory created. In addition, the Oldenburg State Library became a lending center and the leading library for the region during his tenure, and immediate lending was introduced in the library.

From 1946 onwards, Fischer worked at the Volkshochschule Oldenburg, which he also directed from 1949. He was also the head of the Oldenburg Public Library Department. In his own scientific research he devoted himself to book studies.

Fischer was with Hildegard, geb. Brushwood, married. They had four children.
