Matheus Luiz Nunes (born August 27, 1998 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian soccer player . The midfielder has been under contract with Portuguese first division club Sporting Lisbon since January 2019 .

Career

Born in Rio de Janeiro , Matheus Nunes moved with his family to Portugal at the age of 13 , where he joined the youth department of the GDU Ericeirense. For the 2018/19 season he joined the second division GD Estoril Praia , where he was integrated into the first team early on. On October 14, 2018 (7th matchday), he made his debut in a 2-2 draw against Varzim SC in the second-highest Portuguese division when he was in the starting line-up, but was substituted for Renat Dadashov before half-time . At the turn of the year it was used more often and aroused the interest of higher-class clubs.

On January 31, 2019, the first division club Sporting Lisbon acquired 50 percent of the transfer rights from Matheus Nunes and provided him with a contract until June 2024. There he was not used in any competitive first-team game for the rest of the season, but was only used in the reserve. This did not change for the time being in the following season 2019/20 and he only played in the U23. Following the almost three-month forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Nunes was appointed to the first team by the new head coach Rúben Amorim . On June 4, 2020 (25th matchday), he made his first division debut in a 2-2 draw against Vitória Guimarães when he came on for Idrissa Doumbia in the 66th minute of the game . In the next league games he was regularly in the starting line-up.
