Wolfgang Hambüchen (born September 11, 1954 ) is a German gymnastics trainer . He is the father of Fabian Hambüchen .

Life

Hambüchen was born to Heinz Mathes and Anneliese Hambüchen, a granddaughter of the painter Georg Hambüchen , and has three brothers. He graduated from high school at Moltkeplatz in Krefeld in 1974 .

He started gymnastics at the age of ten and for many years was one of the top floor gymnasts at MTV Krefeld (Mädel-Turnverein Krefeld 1956 eV), to which more and more boys have joined over the years. In the mid-1970s he went to Japan for a year and then studied to be a qualified sports teacher in Cologne , where he initially stayed because he could not find a job as a sports teacher in his hometown of Krefeld. Then he married his wife from Bergisch Gladbach and had two sons with her.

Hambüchen's current home club is TSG Niedergirmes (Turn- und Sportgemeinde Niedergirmes 1903 eV) in Wetzlar , where the Hessian Gymnastics Association set up its performance center in the mid-1980s. Hambüchen has been the state trainer for the Hessian Gymnastics Association there since 1987. The gymnasts he trained were among the top at the federal level.

His son Fabian Hambüchen, who he trained, became world champion in Stuttgart in 2007 and Olympic champion on the horizontal bar in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Father and son also appeared together on May 31, 2010 at the 20th celebrity special on the show Wer wird Millionär? on.
