People and faces are the central motif in W. Henning's artistic work. The allusive titles underline this, e.g. For example: "A strange saint", "Resigned soci with decreasing reddening", "Mutant - a little closer to wisdom". Henning acts as a "poetic painter". They are images with at least a double bottom, double messages. Cycles such as the invented “Letters of Eurylochos” or the series “Falling off the ladder” emerged, dealing with the problem of the object. In the pictorial symbolic sequence “The Unloved Children”, his works move between frozen mask and grotesque forms of expression. In his work, he is concerned on the one hand with the condensation of compositional and color-graphic possibilities, on the other hand with a socially engaged topic. The preferred painting media are egg tempera , oil paints and crayons, as well as pencils and ink.

A number of his works are in public collections in Baden-Württemberg.
