Wolfgang Hillen

Wolfgang Hillen (born April 24, 1948 in Osnabrück ; † October 17, 2010 ) was a German microbiologist . He was one of the pioneers in molecular biology in Germany. His work focused on the study of gene expression systems in prokaryotes and the possibility of using these systems as tools in molecular biology.

Career

Wolfgang Hillen studied chemistry at the University of Münster and received his doctorate in biochemistry in 1977 with Hans Günter Gassen . From 1986 until his death he held the chair for microbiology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . In 1997 he received the Max Planck Research Award .

From 2001 he was President of the Association for General and Applied Microbiology (VAAM). For many years he acted as spokesman for BaCaTec (Bavaria California Technology Center) and promoted cooperation between Bavarian and Californian universities and research institutions in the high-tech areas of life sciences, information and communication technology, new materials, environmental technology and mechatronics. In 2002 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
