Wolfgang Hipsius , Latinized Ipseus , also Hipseus , born as Eigener , Ogener or Aigner (* Ybbs on the Danube ; † 1539 ) was a German humanist , university professor and friend of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon .

Life

Hipsius came from what is now Lower Austria . In the summer semester of 1505 he enrolled as a theology student at the University of Leipzig . It was there that he probably met Thomas Müntzer half a semester later . During his studies he named himself after his hometown Ipseus, later Hipsius or Hipseus.

After completing his master's degree, Hipsius worked in Halle and in Stolberg as a schoolmaster and private teacher for the sons of Count Botho zu Stolberg . In the summer semester of 1523 we find Hipsius as a professor at the university . As such, he was there until the end of the winter semester 1525/26. Then he went to a boys' school in Halle / Saale as a teacher . At the mediation of Wilhelm Reiffenstein and Philipp Melanchthon , Hipsius returned to Stolberg (Harz) in 1529 to take over his position after the teacher of the count's children there, Johannes Caesarius , had left. He initially taught Counts Philipp, Albrecht Georg and Heinrich zu Stolberg, then in 1533 he also took on the position of schoolmaster for the citizens' sons of the city of Stolberg in the spirit of Luther, although still officially in the County of Stolberg in consideration of the liege lord Duke Georg of Saxony not the Reformation was introduced.

In 1535 at the latest, Hipsius left the city of Stolberg and moved to Quedlinburg , where he became rector of the Neustadt school there, to which he was appointed by the abbess Anna.
