John Caesarius

Johannes Caesarius (* around 1468 in Jülich ; † December 1550 in Cologne ) was a humanist and doctor at the beginning of modern times.

Life

Caesarius studied at the University of Cologne from 1491 and later continued his studies in Paris and Rome . He received his master's degree in Cologne. He then worked as a private teacher a. a. of Count Hermann von Neuenahr (1492–1530) and traveled with him to Bologna and Ferrara, where he continued his studies of Greek.

He worked in Cologne since 1510, as a Greek teacher in Münster since 1513, and then became a Dr. med. doctorate and temporarily practiced as a doctor in Cologne. Later he continued teaching as a Latinist and Graecist in Mainz (1524, 1529), Leipzig (1527) and Moers (1546) and became known for his textbooks on grammar and rhetoric. To the students of Caesarius, who u. a. maintained an extensive correspondence with Philipp Melanchthon , belonged to Petrus Mosellanus and Agrippa von Nettesheim .
