Athletic career

After Wolfgang Hoyer had his only league appearance on September 7, 1968 at the Sachsenring Zwickau - 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig (3-0) encounter , he was then only called up in the 2nd team of the company sports association (BSG) Sachsenring. This played in the second-rate GDR league , where the 21-year-old Hoyer only played five point games in the 1968/69 season. In the seasons 1969/70 and 1970/71 he developed into a regular player, because he played 53 of the 60 GDR league games played and was also successful with eleven goals. For the 1971/72 season, Hoyer moved to the GDR league club Motor Werdau . From this season on, the league consisted of five seasons with usually twelve teams. Werdau had been classified in season D, in which only eleven teams competed. Hoyer played all 20 point games, was Werdau's top scorer with nine goals and was thus significantly involved in the team's relay victory. In the promotion round to the league, in which Hoyer was used in all eight games and scored one goal, Motor Werdau had no chance with seven defeats and one draw. In the 1972/73 season, Hoyer remained a regular player of the Werzeit period with 21 stakes and four goals. After five league games and one goal, he had to begin an 18-month military service in the National People's Army in November 1973 . After his discharge from the army, Hoyer rejoined Motor Werdau. In 1975/76 he was again the team winner in the GDR league, he had played all 22 point games and contributed to the success with eight goals. Also in the promotion round Hoyer was in all eight games, also scored three goals, but Werdau failed again. Until 1984, Hoyer continued to play in the GDR league with Motor Werdau. Except for 1981/82 (only one point game) he was always a regular player and was team captain between 1977 and 1980. When he ended his career as a GDR league player after the 1983/84 season, he had played 218 point games and scored 51 goals for Motor Werdau, and he had also been used in eight promotion games in which four goals were scored. As a trainer, he continued to work in football, among other things, he helped ISG Greiz to rise to the third-class district league in 1989 .
