Wolfgang Kraus (theologian)

Wolfgang Karl Kraus (* 1955 in Würzburg ) is a Protestant theologian. He is professor for the New Testament at Saarland University .

Life

Kraus began studying Protestant theology in 1974 at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau and continued at the University of Heidelberg , the University of Göttingen and the University of Erlangen . In 1980 he passed his 1st theological exam of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria and in 1982 his 2nd theological exam. From 1980 to 1990 he was vicar and pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria. In 1990 he received his doctorate in Erlangen. theol. and was research assistant to Jürgen Roloff at the Institute for New Testament at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg until 1994 . In 1994 he completed his habilitation in the New Testament in Erlangen. Until 1995 he was professor in Bayreuth and Jena .

From 1996 to 2004 he was a university professor (C3) at the Institute for Protestant Theology at the University of Koblenz-Landau , Koblenz department (professor for the Old and New Testaments and their didactics). Since 2004 he has held the chair for New Testament (C 4) at Saarland University.

In 2014 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon; His project to research destroyed synagogues in Europe was particularly highlighted.

• History of theology of early Christianity (especially Paul, Letter to the Hebrews , Gospel of Matthew )
• Septuagint as the Bible of early Christianity
• New Testament environment
• Christian-Jewish conversation
• Ethics in conversation between theology and human sciences

Others

80 scholars (including Kraus) have submitted a complete German translation and commentary on the Septuagint (the Greek Old Testament) for the first time worldwide.

The interdisciplinary cooperation between theology and cultural or human sciences is a concern of Kraus. He sees himself as part of the tradition of the European Enlightenment and, against the background of the plural culture of Europe, particularly committed to interreligious dialogue in research and teaching.

Kraus is a member of the board of directors of the ZHEUS ( Center for European Historical Research ) at Saarland University and “Research Associate” at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and at the Institute for Septuagint and Biblical Text Research at the Church of Wuppertal. Together with Bernd Schröder he publishes the book series Cultural Basics of Europe .
