life and work

Wolfgang Klaue was born in the Erzgebirge in 1935 and wanted to become a dramaturge early on in the theater. However, he failed the entrance examination at the Weimar Theater Academy . Klaue began studying philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin and graduated in 1957. After working for three months as a dramaturge in the DEFA studio for popular science films, at the end of 1957 he got a job in the State Film Archive of the GDR (SFA for short), which was founded in 1955 , after having previously worked there as an intern. For decades he has been familiar with the ongoing development of the archive and strives to ensure good storage conditions for the GDR film cultural heritage.

In 1969, Klaue succeeded Herbert Volkmann as the new director of the SFA. In 1979 he also became President of the Fédération Internationale des Archives du Film (FIAF for short). After his first term of office, he was re-elected for a further three-year term in 1982. With the integration of the SFA into the film archive of the Federal Archives on October 3, 1990, Klaue was initially transferred to Koblenz and released at the end of 1991. From 1992 to 1997 he carried out research work on a fee basis - among others for the Holocaust Museum in Washington and Erwin Leiser . In 1995, on the occasion of preparations for the 100th birthday of the cinema, he got a job at the Deutsche Kinemathek . In addition, in 1996, financed by the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation , he began preparing for the establishment of a DEFA Foundation .

From 1998 to 2003, Wolfgang Klaue was director of the DEFA Foundation, which was established on December 15, 1998. He then went into retirement. In 2009 he received one of the DEFA foundation prizes awarded annually for his services to German film. In the laudation of the film scholar Hans Helmut Prinzler , it says in appreciation: "For the Deutsche Kinemathek on the other side of the Wall, Wolfgang Klaue became a colleague and partner to whom the preservation of the cinematic heritage was more important than the ideology that separated us. Without him we would have 1987 unable to host the FIFG congress in West Berlin. And I always fondly remember how we made German film history present at a scientific congress in Chicago in 1988 - western and eastern. "

For his services to film culture and film heritage, he was awarded the honorary award of the German Kinematheksverbund in 2019 as part of the Film: ReStored_04 film heritage festival .
