German Kinematheksverbund
The German Kinematheksverbund is an association of German film archives and cinematheques .
history
The network was founded in 1978 by the Bundesarchiv-Filmarchiv (then Koblenz, today Berlin), the German Institute for Film Studies (DIF) (Wiesbaden, today: Deutsches Filminstitut - DIF ) and the Deutsche Kinemathek (Berlin, today: Filmmuseum Berlin - Deutsche Kinemathek ) . The framework of the cooperation is regulated by an “administrative agreement on the establishment and maintenance of a cinematheque network” concluded on December 1, 1978.
With the administrative agreement, the film archive of the Federal Archives was assigned the task of a central German film archive: collecting and safeguarding German film production as completely as possible from its beginnings to the present, restoring old copies, and producing new source materials. The institutions in Berlin and Wiesbaden were to take on the processing and mediation of German film: the non-commercial distribution of historically important German films, the organization of retrospectives and exhibitions, the publication of film historical studies, the collection of secondary materials on film history, and the archiving of foreign films and special collections. All three institutions fulfill cultural-political tasks of national importance and are assigned to the Federal Commissioner for Cultural Affairs or are supported by him.
Over the years, further film institutions were added through co-option : CineGraph - Hamburg Center for Film Research , German Film Museum Frankfurt / Main, Filmmuseum Düsseldorf , Film Museum Munich , Film Museum Potsdam and House of Documentary Films , Stuttgart. In addition to representatives of the authorities, the DEFA Foundation and the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation also take part as permanent guests in the meetings of the coordination council of the Kinematheksverbund, which take place twice a year. On the occasion of the transfer of sponsorship for the Deutsche Kinemathek Foundation from the State of Berlin to the Federal Republic of Germany, a new cooperation agreement was signed in 2005, which continues the previous division of responsibilities.
Coordination of the film archives and museums
Due to the cultural sovereignty of the federal states, there is no national film archive in Germany - unlike in the former GDR , for example - in which copies of every film produced in the country are kept. Copies or negatives of old German films are now stored in a number of archives, cinematheques, foundations and museums that are scattered all over Germany and usually only work loosely together. Purchasing and storage are random, and cinema operators and researchers often have considerable difficulty locating the location of a particular film. So far there is no common catalog of the German film archives.
The Kinematheksverbund tries to coordinate the work of the various institutions. In addition to the meetings of the Coordination Council, there are also working groups devoted to various aspects of the work of the members and used to exchange experiences.
The working groups on German filmography and exhibitions and film-related collections , headed by Claudia Dillmann from the German Film Institute , compiled a filmography of all feature films. which were manufactured in Germany from 1895 to 1998. Another database presents the top 100 German films. The film archive of the Federal Archives , CineGraph, the German Film Museum, the German Film Institute, the Society for Film Studies and the silent film expert Herbert Birett were involved . The two databases were published on CD-ROM in 2000 by the Kinematheksverband as publisher.
Cinema award of the Kinematheksverbund
Since some important film archives such as For example, if the Federal Archives Film Archive does not have its own cinema for showing its holdings, the Kinematheksverbund is also working on expanding the relationships between archives and arthouse cinemas. Since 2000, it has sponsored municipal and non-commercial film organizers who make a special contribution to showing classic films with a cinema award. The prize is awarded annually to municipal cinemas and film cultural initiatives "for outstanding programs and continuous commitment to a demanding and diverse cinema culture in Germany". A jury of five experts who have relevant experience in the field of cultural film work will decide on the award.
After the cinema award was initially up for grabs due to the lack of sustainable funding, the Deutsche Kinemathek was able to award the award in 2015, contrary to its announcement in March. In 2016, the prize was financed from the budget of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and a top prize was awarded for the first time.
Lotte Eisner Prize
Based on the film critic and historian Lotte Eisner , who emigrated in 1933 , the new top prize is called the Lotte Eisner Prize .
