Life

Wolfgang Merzenich was born in Angermünde in 1942. He began studying mathematics and computer science at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen , which he continued at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . At the Institute for Automata Theory and Switching Mechanisms of the GMD Research Center for Information Technology , Merzenich was a scientific employee from 1971 to 1973. In 1973 he did his doctorate at the University of Bonn under Karl Heinz Böhling with the dissertation Algebraic Characterization of Additive Automata Arrays . He then worked at the Technical University of Dortmund , where he completed his habilitation in 1980 , first as a research assistant and then as a private lecturer. In 1989 Merzenich was appointed professor for programming languages at the University of Siegen . He made a major contribution to integrating computer science and electrical engineering into a joint department, which he also temporarily headed as dean.

Together with Hans Christoph Zeidler , he wrote the textbook Computer Science for Engineers .

Wolfgang Merzenich retired from the University of Siegen in 2007.
