Wolfgang Neff

Wolfgang Neff (born September 8, 1875 in Prague , Austria-Hungary , † after November 1936 ) was an Austrian actor , theater director and film director .

Life

He first worked for two years in his uncle's glass export company. He then worked for three years as an office worker and trained in painting for one year. From 1900 to 1903 he received acting lessons from Günther Pettera .

Neff made his stage debut in Lüneburg in 1903 . Further stations were Thorn (1904), Stralsund (1905), Konstanz (1906) and Kiel (1909). In 1910 he came to Berlin and in 1911 was appointed senior director at the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtische Schauspielhaus. He played the title roles in King Lear , Macbeth and Nathan the Wise .

In 1913 he stood in front of the camera for the first time as an actor, and from 1920 he was exclusively active as a film director. He made films of all kinds, including repeatedly love films and comedies by screenwriter Jane Beß . His mountain film The Road to Death on the Bernina became the last German silent film in 1931.

In the age of the sound film he received no directing orders, Neff was still employed in Berlin producing documentaries until 1936. He then returned to his hometown Prague.
