With Hans Goetting in Göttingen he received his doctorate in 1969 on the Counts of Wöltingerode Wohldenberg , a noble family that had a major impact on the history of southern Lower Saxony in the 12th and 13th centuries. Petke researched nobility and rule in the Middle Ages. His Göttingen habilitation thesis deals with “the people who were responsible for the making of political decisions at the court of Emperor Lothar III. were involved ”and“ who were close to the king as advisers, confidants and helpers ”. With his habilitation and as the editor of the Regesta Imperii from 1125 to 1137, he ensured a better understanding of the reign of Süpplingenburg 's Lothars III. Petke presented relevant works on the medieval parish and was able to win numerous students in Göttingen who published fundamental studies on the medieval parish. Petke also published important papers on diplomacy in the field of historical auxiliary sciences.
