Wolfgang Popp (born May 19, 1959 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a former German tennis player , sports manager and photo artist .

education

Abitur at the Bettina School in Frankfurt am Main in 1978, Bundeswehr , Army and Air Force, basic studies in biology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main.

Life

Wolfgang Popp won several German youth championship titles (1976, 1977) and was European youth champion in 1976. In 1983 he was the first German champion in a dramatic 5-set match against Karl Meiler , he won another German championship title in 1988. In 1980 he was the first German double champion in the hall with Jürgen Faßbender . Further German double titles followed in the hall in 1986 and at the German Open Air Championships in 1980, 1982, 1983 (with Andreas Maurer ) and 1988, 1991 (with Udo Riglewski ). With his club TC Blau-Weiß Neuss he won 7 German championships in the tennis Bundesliga from 1983 to 1990.

He played on the ATP tour from 1979 to 1988 and achieved his best placement in May 1985 (ATP ranking 81). In doubles he won the 1987 ATP tournament in Florence (Grand Prix) in doubles with Udo Riglewski.

For Germany he played in the Davis Cup team from 1982 to 1984 and, after relegation from the World Group against Argentina (Vilas, Clerc, Gattiker, Ganzabal) in Buenos Aires in 1982, he was promoted again in 1983 against Switzerland (H. Günthardt, M. Günthardt, Stadler) in Freiburg.

He and his team (Keretic, Westphal, Jelen, Schwaier) surprisingly won the King's Cup against Sweden in Uppsala in 1983 and played for Germany at the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf for over 4 years.

After his active career, he worked for 2 years as Eric Jelen's coach and began a professional career in sports management at IMG, DTB, Schmidt and Kaiser GmbH and Zimmermann GmbH in 1991.

In 2007 he intensified his passion for photography, which he had been practicing since the age of twenty, parallel to his tennis trips. In addition, he completed an apprenticeship in digital media production and had his first photo exhibition in 2010 on Düsseldorf's Königsallee. Since 2011 he has been working in his own photo studio / private gallery in Düsseldorf.
