Wolfgang Ritter (biologist)

Wolfgang Ritter (born October 28, 1948 ) is a German biologist and specialist in the field of varroosis and bee pathology.

Wolfgang Ritter studied biology and chemistry at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and did his doctorate at the Institute for Apiculture in Oberursel . Since 1980 he has been head of the apiculture department at the Animal Hygiene Institute in Freiburg im Breisgau (today part of the Catholic University of Freiburg ). In 1987 Ritter became President of the Scientific Commission for Bee Health in the World Organization of Beekeeping Associations Apimondia , and since 1991 expert and head of the reference laboratory for bee diseases of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Until 2007, Ritter was a lecturer at the University of Kassel at the Faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences in the area of ​​bees. Ritter has also been a course instructor for European veterinarians at DG Sanco since 2010 as part of "Better Training for safer food in EU countries".

In his specialist field of varroosis and bee pathology, Ritter published around 250 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is (co-) author of several books and papers.
