Wolfgang Schmale

Wolfgang Schmale (born April 4, 1956 in Würzburg ) is a German historian .

Wolfgang Schmale was born in Würzburg in 1956 as the second of three children to Irene Schmale-Ott and Franz-Josef Schmale . After graduating from high school in Bochum in 1974 and completing two years of military service, Wolfgang Schmale studied history, French and an accompanying pedagogical subject at the Ruhr University in Bochum and at the University of Bordeaux III from 1976 to 1981 . In 1981 the first state examination for teaching was carried out. From 1981 to 1984 Schmale worked as a research assistant. In 1984 he received his doctorate in Bochum with the thesis Rural Resistance, Courts and Legal Development in France . There he was also employed as a research assistant from 1989 to 1993.

From 1993 to 1995 he was a research assistant at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). His habilitation for modern and contemporary history took place there in 1995 with the work Archeology of Basic and Human Rights in the Early Modern Era. From 1995 to 1996 he was a substitute professor for modern history and early modern history at the TU Braunschweig . Another substitute professor for the history of the early modern period followed in 1998 at the LMU Munich. Since 1999 Schmale has been teaching as professor for modern history at the University of Vienna .

His main research interests include European history, French modern history and the legal and constitutional history of modern times. He was admitted to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts . In 2017 Schmale was elected to the Academia Europaea .
