Wolfgang Schmidt (born March 11, 1948 , † after 1978) was a German football player. In 1974 he played briefly for FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football .

Athletic career

Wolfgang Schmidt made his start in high-class football when, at the age of 20, he played his first four point games for the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Meiningen in the second-class GDR league in the 1967/68 season . From the following season until 1972/73 he was a regular player in the ASG, of the 134 GDR league games played in this period, he played 114 games in which he scored 35 goals. With eleven goals, he had his best goal rate in 1970/71. For the 1973/74 season Schmidt moved to FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt. There he was initially only able to play two point games for the 2nd team in the GDR league. For the season 1974/75 he was registered for the league team, but was only used there in two point games. Instead, he completed 18 of the 22 league games of the 2nd team and scored eight goals. Since RWE II was relegated from the GDR league at the end of the season and Schmidt was no longer taken into account for the top division team, he disappeared from the first and second level of football for several years. It was only in the 1976/77 season that he appeared again for one season in the GDR league. For the promoted BSG Umformtechnik Erfurt he played 17 of 22 league games in which he was able to score eight goals. After a year, the BSG was relegated to the third-class district league , and for Wolfgang Schmidt this meant the final farewell to competitive football. There he had two league games (0 goals) and 138 GDR league games with 43 goals within nine seasons.
