The Ringgold Knoll is a mountain on the Oates coast of the East Antarctic Victoria Land . It rises 15 km south of Archer Point on the eastern flank of the Matusevich glacier .
On January 16, 1840, Lieutenant Commander Cadwalader Ringgold (1802-1867) sighted from the research vessel Porpoise during the United States Exploring Expedition (1838-1842) led by polar explorer Charles Wilkes , a large and dark mountain in this area. Wilkes named it Ringgold's Knoll . The Australian polar explorer Phillip Law was unable to identify this mountain from the position indicated by Wilkes during his exploration work as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in 1959. For reasons of naming continuity, he transferred Wilkes' naming in a slightly modified form to the mountain described here.
