Wolfgang Schumann (born October 14, 1957 ) is a former German soccer player. In the early 1980s he played in the GDR Oberliga , the top division in GDR football , for FC Hansa Rostock .

Athletic career

Schumann first appeared in a men's team in national GDR football in the 1975/76 season . The company sports community (BSG) KKW Greifswald , playing in the second-rate GDR league , put the striker in two league games as a substitute at the end of the season. From 1977 Schumann was part of the Greifswald player base, for whom he played 72 point games by the end of the season. In his matches he scored 25 goals and was the BSG KKW's top scorer in 1978/79 (together with Herbert Nekwapil) and 1979/80 with seven and eleven goals respectively.

After Schumann had completed the first three point games for KKW Greifswald at the beginning of the 1980/81 season, the GDR upper division club FC Hansa Rostock brought him into his team. On October 4, 1980 Schumann had his first league appearance when he came on in the game FC Hansa - Dynamo Dresden (1: 1) in the 57th minute for right winger Ronald Adam . By the end of the season, Schumann had played a total of eleven point games, four of which were from the start, and scored two point game goals. He was also used in five games in the junior league, in which he scored four goals. 1981/82 he was used with 14 games (3 goals) in the junior league more often than in the upper league, in which he only played eight times and scored no goal. Schumann played his last league game on November 28, 1981 in the game FC Hansa - Wismut Aue (2-2). For the 1982/83 season he was deleted from the league squad and was used three times in the junior league until September 1982.

On September 26, 1982, Schumann was back for BSG KKW Greifswald in the GDR league team. He immediately had a regular place and played 16 of the 22 point games played by the end of the season (2 goals). After that, KKW had to relegate to the district league, in which Schumann played until October 1983. In November 1983 Schumann was called up for military service, but was able to continue playing football with the GDR league club ASG Vorwärts Stralsund . At the beginning of the 1986/87 season he played again for BSG KKW Greifswald, which had meanwhile been promoted back to the GDR league. After he had been used as a right attacker for twelve point games over the full playing time, he had to be content with the role of a substitute player for the rest of the season. It stayed that way until Schumann completed his last league league game for KKW Greifswald on March 23, 1988. Although he was still registered for the first team for the 1988/89 season, he was no longer used.
