Wolfgang Utech becomes GDR decathlon champion in 1964

Wolfgang Utech (born March 18, 1937 in Kiel ) is a former athlete from the German Democratic Republic who won the GDR championship title in the decathlon five times .

Utech took third place in the 110-meter hurdles at the GDR championships in 1958. From 1959 to 1961 Utech won three times in a row at the GDR championships in the decathlon, in 1963 and 1964 he was again successful, in 1965 he finished second behind Horst Mempel . With five championship titles, Utech was the most successful championship participant among the decathletes from the GDR. In 1963 he improved Walter Meier's GDR record to 7408 points (7273 points according to today's rating), in 1964 it increased to 7484 points (today 7365), shortly afterwards Werner Glatz outbid him . However , Utech was 600 points away from Willi Holdorf's all-German record in 1963, while Manfred Bock was over 800 points ahead of Utech in 1964. In view of the more powerful decathletes from the Federal Republic of Germany, Utech was never able to qualify for the all-German team at major international events.

Utech took part in ten competitions in the national jersey between 1957 and 1967, otherwise he competed for the SC Chemie Halle .
