Alexander Dimow Jankow (also written Alexander Dimov Yankov , Bulgarian Александър Димов Янков ; born June 22, 1924 in Burgas ; † October 17, 2019 ) was a Bulgarian lawyer and university professor who was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea from 1996 to 2011 .

Life

Alexander Jankow was born in the Bulgarian port city of Burgas. He studied law at the University of Sofia he graduated in 1951 from around there in 1963 for Doctor of Laws to graduate .

Jankow has been a professor of international law at the University of Sofia since 1968. From 1980 to 1989 he was also head of the international law department at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences , where he was deputy rector from 1988 to 1991, responsible for the departments of sociology , politics , law and the humanities . He also gave lectures on international and maritime law at the Free University of Burgas , the Hague Academy for International Law and numerous other universities worldwide.

From 1972 to 1976 Jankow was Bulgarian Ambassador to Great Britain and from 1976 to 1980 Deputy Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the United Nations in New York . From 1989 to 1990 he then held the office of Minister of Education and Science.

Jankow gained experience as a judge as a member of the Court of Arbitration of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1971 to 1987 and from 1971 to 1998 at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague . From October 1, 1996 to September 30, 2011, he was a judge at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg .

Jankow has been a corresponding member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 1981. He is also an honorary doctor of the Free University of Burgas and the South-West University Neofit Rilski in Blagoevgrad .

2001 Jankow was honored with the honorary citizenship of his hometown and with the order "Stara Planina" .
