Wolfram Manzenreiter

Wolfram Manzenreiter (born March 19, 1964 in Krefeld ) is a German Japanologist .

Life

From 1989 to 1993 he studied Japanese Studies at the University of Vienna . From 1994 to 2004 he was an assistant at the Institute for Japanese Studies (until 1998/2000) and at the Institute for East Asian Studies (from 2000) at the University of Vienna. After completing his doctorate in Japanese Studies in Vienna in 1998, he was the professor for Sociology and Modern Society of Japan at the University of Duisburg-Essen in 2004 . From 2004 to 2013 he was assistant professor at the Institute for East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna. In 2005 he was the professor for Japanese studies in the social sciences at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf . In 2006 he was visiting professor at the University of Paris VII . In 2010 he was visiting professor at Ritsumeikan University . After completing his habilitation in Japanese studies in 2012, he has been teaching at the professorship for Japanese studies at the Institute for East Asian Studies at the University of Vienna since May 2013 .

His main research interests are modern Japanese society, the sociology of globalization, sport and body politics, the anthropology of gambling and transnationalism, diaspora and migration.
