St. Wolfsindis von Reisbach. Around 1900.

Wolfsindis von Reisbach is a regional saint of the Middle Ages in Lower Bavaria who is venerated as a holy virgin and martyr. The worship dates back to the 7th or 8th century.

Legend has it that Wolfsindis secretly became a Christian and was slain by the pagan father, whereupon a spring rose at the place of her death. According to another tradition, as a Christian virgin , she is said to have been tied to a horse by an admirer and dragged to death.

The saint and her grave were venerated at the latest since the 8th century, when the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III. (748–788) gave around 753/772 Reisbach to the Wessobrunn monastery. A church synod took place there in 798/799 . Wolfsindis is mentioned in a Wessobrunn necrology from the 10th century. They also list a document from Regensburg Bishop Heinrich I (1132–1155) from 1139 and a St. Gallen necrology from the 12th century. The Wolfsindis feast has been celebrated in Reisbach and neighboring Dirnaich since 1753 . The day of death and remembrance of the Wolfsindis has been September 2nd since ancient times . Its historicity is not in doubt, but its martyrdom is. The cult of the saints is linked to a spring cult: in the 18th and 19th centuries, many healings were ascribed to the water that now rises under the altar of the little church, which was built in 1822.
