The sea ​​cardinalfish ( Cheilodipterus artus ) lives in the Indo-Pacific , from East Africa to Tuamotu in water depths of three to 20 meters. The northernmost occurrence is on the Ryūkyū Islands , the southernmost on the Great Barrier Reef .

The fish, which can be up to 18 centimeters long, have an elongated shape with a silvery basic color and numerous brown vertical stripes. The males have a yellow, females have a gray tail with a small black spot on both sides. In juvenile fish the spot is small and black and surrounded by a large golden shimmering zone.

Way of life

Sea cardinalfish live in small schools in sheltered lagoons and bays, hide in caves and under corals during the day and look for food at dusk and at night. The cardinalfish are predatory, mainly on small fish and also on zooplankton .
