features

Cheilodipterus species are in most cases relatively large cardinalfish and reach lengths of 6 to 25 cm. Their body, covered by comb scales , is slim, the color is light with more or less dark longitudinal stripes on the head and body sides and a diffuse or clearly visible dark, sometimes yellow-edged spot or a dark band on the tail stalk. The caudal fin is forked or notched. The premaxillary and lower jaws of the often piscivorous fish are covered with fangs, the palate with brush-like teeth. The supramaxillary, a bone of the upper jaw, is reduced. The ridge of Vorkiemendeckels (Preoperculum) is smooth, cut the edges. The stomach, intestines, and peritoneum are pale.
