The little oak carmine ( Catocala promissa ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).
features
The moths reach a fore wing length of 28 to 32 millimeters. The forewings imitate a tree bark with the help of a restless light and dark brown color. This random-looking pattern is surprisingly constant within the species. The hind wings are bright red and a wide black band runs along the edge. In the middle part of the rear wing you can see a second, weak and twice curved, black line that ends before reaching the wing edge.

Geographical distribution and habitat
You can find this type of butterfly in sunny, dry places in mixed deciduous forests with oaks , larger field trees and bushy slopes. The distribution area extends over the temperate zones of Europe and in Asia Minor to Armenia . The animals are not as common on the north side of the Alps as on the south side. In the mountains up to a height of 800 m. However, this species is nowhere common. In the Austrian foothills of the Alps (e.g. in Trattenbach) the species could only rarely be detected. The species is more common in Carinthia, Styria and Burgenland.
Way of life
The flight time begins very early in July and ends earlier at the end of August. The caterpillars are found from May to June. The eggs overwinter and the caterpillars hatch with the first green of spring. The caterpillars mostly feed on young oak leaves ( Quercus spec. ). Occasionally they can also be found on horse chestnuts in old chestnut avenues .
