Woman III is a painting of abstract expressionism by the American painter Willem de Kooning , created in a series of six related female portraits between 1951 and 1953. The format of the picture, completed in 1953, is 1.2 × 1.7 meters.

From the late 1970s to 1994, the work belonged to the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art , but was no longer allowed to be shown after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Finally, it was brokered in 1994 by the Swiss art dealer Thomas Ammann to the American music and film producer David Geffen in exchange for leaving the book of the Kings Shahnameh .

In November 2006, Geffen sold the painting to hedge fund billionaire Steven A. Cohen for $ 142.5 million, one of the highest amounts ever for a single painting.
