In 1908 the wealthy Gilbert F. Stevenson from Los Angeles bought about 13,000 acres (about 53 km²) of land. He wanted to build citrus plantations around a community planned on the drawing board. The first houses were built around the streets laid out by Stevenson, the water and sewer network and drinking water sources.

In the period that followed, the place continued to develop. A bridge was built over the St. John's River, half of which was paid for by Stevenson, and the connection to the railroad network, which was based on a donation by Stevenson of three miles for a railroad area, was made.
