history

The villa was built around 1855 in the historicizing Italianate style . In 1880 James Sanderson , who had bought the nearby Comelybank Mill that same year, bought Woodlands House. Four years later he commissioned the Edinburgh architect George Henderson to redesign and extend the villa. This neo-Elizabethan style work dominates the current appearance of the building. With the electrification of Sanderson's Mill, an underground cable was laid to Woodlands House, making it the first residential building with electric lighting in Galashiels. In 1979 the villa was first converted into a hotel, before being restored to the condition of a private residence in 2005.
