Woolwich is a municipality in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo in the southwest of the Canadian province of Ontario with 23,145 inhabitants (2011).
geography
The Woolwich area is enclosed in the south by the cities of Cambridge , Kitchener and Waterloo . About 55 kilometers southeast is Hamilton , 80 kilometers east of Toronto . The Highway 401 , and Macdonald-Cartier Freeway , called tangent Woolwich in southeast. The Grand River flows through the community .
history
The first settler settled in the area in 1807. More settlers, mostly from Germany, who were mostly Mennonites , followed in the 1830s and successfully farmed. And English farmers settled and named the place based on the close of London perched village Woolwich also Woolwich. With the connection to rail connections and the use of the hydropower of the Grand River, the infrastructure improved significantly in the following years.
Agriculture is still the dominant industry today. In addition, the community is developing as a commuter hub for those employed in the larger cities around.
Woolwich has a number of historically valuable buildings on the List of historic places in Regional Municipality of Waterloo , including: John B. Snyder House, McDonald House, Swope House and Steiner Residence.
