Words Without Borders is an international literary magazine founded in 2003 and published online. Their program is the translation and dissemination of outstanding contemporary texts that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to access for the English-speaking readership. Up to twelve times a year, literary texts and essays by both unknown and established authors from 126 countries and 105 languages (as of June 2016) appear in the journal - for example by Fadhil al-Azzawi , Tahar Ben Jelloun , JMG Le Clézio , Mahmoud Darwish , Jenny Erpenbeck , Paweł Huelle , Herta Müller , AB Yehoshua , Naguib Mahfouz , Per Petterson , Ricardo Piglia , WG Sebald , Sjón , Rabindranath Tagore , Marlene van Niekerk , Ko Un and Can Xue .
The non-commercial magazine will u. a. Funded by the National Endowment for the Arts , the New York State Council on the Arts, the British Center for Literary Translation, the Nippon Foundation and the Mission Culturelle et Universitaire Française aux Etats Unis.
In cooperation with various publishers, several printed anthologies were created, including a. Literature from the “Axis of Evil”: Writing from Iran, Iraq, North Korea, and Other Enemy Nations (2007), The Wall in My Head: Words and Images from the Fall of the Iron Curtain (2009), Tablet and Pen: Literary Landscapes of the Middle East (2011).
In 2014, the magazine launched the teaching program Words without Borders Campus, which provides teaching material on contemporary international literature.
Ottaway Award
Words Without Borders has been presenting the Ottaway Award for the Promotion of International Literature for special achievements in literary translation into English since 2013 . The award was named after James H. Ottaway Jr., the magazine's founding chairman.
