The World IPv6 Day ( World IPv6 Day ) was an action that was sponsored and organized by the Internet Society and various large providers with the aim of testing the use of IPv6 . On January 12, 2011, World IPv6 Day and the participation of the five companies Facebook , Google , Yahoo , Akamai Technologies and Limelight Networks were announced. World IPv6 Day began on June 8, 2011 at 00:00 UTC and ended at 23:59 on the same day.

After the great success, the campaign was carried out again on June 6, 2012 under the name World IPv6 Launch and the motto this time it is for real “this time really”. On this day, all participants were asked to permanently activate IPv6.

The main reason for holding World IPv6 Day was to identify possible disruptions and problems with a future changeover to the IPv6 protocol. To make this possible, major Internet companies and companies activated the IPv6 protocol on their websites during World IPv6 Day. Another goal of the day was to motivate companies worldwide, including providers , hardware manufacturers, operating system distributors and Internet companies, to upgrade their services and products with IPv6 so that a transition from IPv4 to IPv6 will be possible without major problems.

The test mainly consisted of the participating companies publishing AAAA Resource Records for their websites , which allow a client to access the website via IPv6. Although Internet service providers were also encouraged to participate, most of them merely increased their willingness to answer questions from end users.

Many companies and organizations took part in this experiment, including the largest search engines , social networks , internet backbones, etc.

Attendees

In total, more than 400 participants took part in World IPv6 Day, including companies with the most visited websites worldwide: Comcast , Google , Yahoo , Facebook , YouTube , Akamai Technologies , Limelight Networks , Microsoft , Vonage , AOL , MapQuest , T-Online , Cisco , Juniper Networks , Huawei , the United States Department of Commerce , Mastercard , BBC, and Telmex .

Result

Leading operators measured an increase in IPv6 traffic on World IPv6 Day, Arbor Networks from 0.024% to 0.041%. On the whole, the day passed without any significant problems for the participants. Cisco and Google reported that there were no major errors during the test. Facebook encouraged the result and decided to keep the IPv6 protocol activated on their developer side. The technology predominantly used was dual-stack , i.e. the parallel operation of IPv4 and IPv6 on the same infrastructure.
