The Vorontsov Palace ( Ukrainian Воронцовський палац ; Russian Воронцовский дворец ) or the Alupka Palace is a historical monument at the foot of the Crimean Mountains near Alupka , Crimea . The Vorontsov Palace is one of the oldest and largest palaces and one of the most popular tourist attractions on the south coast of the peninsula.

history

In 1828 the Russian Prince Mikhail Voronzow had a residence built for himself . The architect and planner of the romantic palace was the famous Edward Blore , who is known as one of the architects of Buckingham Palace in London . The building was realized by the architects Francesco Boffo and William Gunt . The castle is built from the sea side in the Moorish architectural style and from the mountain side it is built in the English neo-Gothic style. The castle is surrounded by a huge landscape park that was created by the German landscape architect Karl Kebach . The creation of the park took several decades, as the climatic conditions and the stony soil made the work difficult. During the Yalta Conference in 1945, Winston Churchill and the British delegation lived in the castle. It took place in the nearby Livadija Palace .

The Vorontsov Palace was built according to new architectural and construction principles. An important architectural feature was the location of the castle. The palace fits very harmoniously into the surrounding landscape because it is adapted to the mountains. The palace was built in the English style , which is very harmoniously combined with the Moorish revival architecture.

interior

The palace consists of a total of 150 rooms. Inside is a large library, dining room, and billiard room with a bath for men, and a massive drawing room for women.

The most notable rooms in the palace are the blue room, the dining room and the Chinese cabinet.

An interesting fact is that the palace architect Edward Blore was a friend of Sir Walter Scott . He designed the library of the palace along the lines of Scott's library. There are more than 6000 literary and musical works from the 18th and 19th centuries in this room.
