The Worth Street is a street in the south of New York City's borough Manhattan , USA .

Location and course

The street stretches from Hudson Street ( Tribeca ) in the west to Chatham Square in the east. Here the traffic runs in both directions. After Chatham Square, the street continues as Oliver Street and then runs northwest as a one-way street .

Between West Broadway and Church Street , Worth Street is also called Justice John M. Harlan Way - in honor of John Marshall Harlan II , a former US Supreme Court Justice and a graduate of the nearby New York Law School . Between Center Street and Baxter Street Knowing the Worth Street as "Avenue of the Strongest" ( Avenue of the fittest ) with reference to the nickname "New York's Strongest" ( The strongest of New York ) for the New York City Department of Sanitation which is responsible for garbage disposal and street cleaning.

history

Originally Worth Street began at the Five Points Intersection and headed west under the name Anthony Street . In 1859 the portion between Five Points Intersection and Chatham Square was opened to the west of the city and the entire street was renamed Worth Street. This was in honor of Major General William J. Worth , a war hero of the Mexican-American War of 1848, who is buried more than three kilometers north (two miles) in Worth Square (at the north end of Madison Square ).

Worth Street runs through a cluster of government offices and courthouses that surround Foley Square . In the house 125 Worth Street , the headquarters of the are New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation , the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Sanitation housed. Also worth mentioning here are the New York Supreme Court buildings ( 60 Center Street , 80 Center Street (the Louis Lefkowitz Building)) and the Daniel Patrick Moynihan courthouse ( United States District Court for the Southern District of New York ) at 500 Pearl Street , all of whose entrances are on Worth Street.
