Wu Man (2011)

Wu Man (* 1963 in Hangzhou ) is a Chinese pipa player and composer.

Wu studied at the Central Music Conservatory in Beijing with Lin Shicheng , Kuang Yuzhong , Chen Zemin and Liu Dehai . She received her master's degree in pipa and in 1989 she won first prize in the national music interpreter competition. She has lived in the USA since 1990. She is active in the field of contemporary music, jazz and world music.

Ensembles that Wu regularly works with include Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Ensemble and the Kronos Quartet . She also performed with Henry Threadgill , Liu Suola and Martin Simpson, among others . Musicians like Terry Riley , Philip Glass , Lou Harrison , Tan Dun , Bright Sheng , Chen Yi , Zhou Long , Gabriela Lena Frank , Bun-Ching Lam and Evan Ziporyn composed works for her.

The documentary Discovering a Musical Heartland - Wu Man's Return to China was made about a trip to China . In 2009 she performed the piece A Chinese Home with the Kronos Quartet under the direction of Chen Shi-Zheng , on which she also participated as a pipa player as a singer, actress and percussionist. In 2010 she played the seven-part work Orion with the Philip Glass Ensemble in Mexico . In February 2011 she gave the world premiere of Yiu-Kwong Chung's Concerto for Pipa and Orchestra The Yang's Saga with the Taipei Chinese Orchestra .
